Home maintenance can prove to be complicated at times, with the many systems a home needs in order for it to be inhabitable. Some of the most important systems are the electrical, gas, heating, and plumbing systems, and it can be said that a house’s plumbing is the most challenging to keep in order. This may not be the case in all homes, but it is easy to see why many make such a claim.

Plumbing problems can happen seemingly out of nowhere. One opens the tap and all of a sudden, he or she finds that the tap or the pipe it is attached to has started leaking. Wet spots might appear in different parts of the home where water runs. After washing the dishes in the sink and doing the laundry, water might take way too long to go down the drain.

Sorting out the plumbing problems mentioned above requires the replacement of leaky plumbing fixtures and the clearing of drain blockages using chemical or mechanical means. In the case of the solutions for blocked drains, there is a good chance that they will not work, and when they are unable to address blockages properly, it’s safe to say that something serious has happened, particularly a sewer line blockage.

The above problem is why a household must avoid tossing trash and food debris down drains. However, debris is not its primary cause – it’s tree root intrusion. Tree root intrusion happens when a number of tree roots make their way into the pipe interior through cracks or holes on pipes.

The most effective solutions to the above are:

  • Pipe clearing using a machine called an electric eel (which is like a plumbing snake)
  • Pipe relining

While the first solution can address blockages caused by roots making their way in the pipe, it has a number of disadvantages:

  • It cannot address eventual root regrowth, making pipe replacement necessary at a later date.
  • Individual assessment of each pipe may be required, and this takes some time.

Pipe relining, on the other hand, has the following advantages:

  • Since the new lining is made of fibreglass, it can prevent future root intrusions from occurring.
  • Unlike the first solution to the problem, digging is not required in pipe relining a lot of the time, removing the need to hire landscape experts afterwards.
  • Individual pipe assessment is also not necessary in the process of pipe relining, making it hassle-free.
  • In addition, since the lining to be installed is thin, you do not need to worry about the reduction of the overall diameter of the pipe.

To know more about the process, here are the steps:

  • The pipe is partially cleaned with high water pressure.
  • The blockage is assessed using video.
  • Footage is then used to determine if pipe relining best solves the problem.
  • Once a decision is made to sort the problem out with pipe relining, the sewer pipe is completely cleaned out.
  • The fiberglass lining is then installed and left there until it dries.
  • Another video, this time of the new lining, is taken for quality assessment.
